Spijkers en Spijkers SS13

The hottest event of the year is upon us once again and I am, once again, looking for the perfect outfit to wear on this sunny day. Dressed in Karen Millen trousers, top and blazer, Guess shoes with my Edina Ronay handbag and CK sunnies, I excitedly head down to London Fashion Week.

The buzz and fashion fervour is tangible. It is evident that everybody has dressed to impress for, what is, the seasons biggest event for fashionistas. Snapping away are the cameras of those who are interested in people, clothes, and trends for their websites and the exhibition inside Somerset House showcases some luxurious clothing and jewellery.

Taking my seat for the Spijkers en Spijkers show, entitled ‘La Femme Paysage,’ I eagerly anticipate the collection designed by Dutch twins Riet and Truus.

The ramp lights up and the models showcase clothing that sport 3-dimensional shapes in block colours. Triangles and rectangular shapes create a slight sharpness against the romantic nudes, beiges and blues. The sisters cleverly add hints of neon orange to produce an edge to the outfits. The designs range from chic dresses, to sharp but flirty suits. Their use of lace and see through materials are sensual and sassy but nonetheless graceful.

The models adopt an amorous look with their hair being styled in soft plaits by Toni&Guy.

It is apparent that Riet and Truus have put the ‘femme’ in ‘feminine’ this season with their elegant collection that has a sexy edge. When speaking with the designers, they explain that the collection is ‘romantic’ and ‘poetic’ and that ‘you need romance.’

The sisters are friendly and seem to get on well. ‘We get on well as siblings. Sometimes we fight but that makes us sharp.’ Their inspiration for this collection derives from artist Sonia Delaunay who was famous for her use of strong colours and geometric shapes. The sisters hope to open a store in the future. Watch this space!
